Case Description
In April 2022, in the occupied Mariupol, Russian military personnel took prisoner a Ukrainian serviceman, a soldier of the howitzer artillery division of the Azov Regiment of the 12th Operational Brigade (military unit 3057), Vladislav Sigis (Syhys) (call sign "Collapse"). Subsequently, he was accused of murdering two people on the grounds of hatred and enmity towards a social group, as well as using prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict. According to the Russian investigation, around 7 p.m. on March 12, 2022, Sygyys was conducting combat patrol near house number 6 on Pobedy Avenue in Mariupol. Using as a motive the unfounded assumption of assistance to Russian servicemen and fighters of the People's Militia of the DPR by peaceful residents, experiencing hatred and enmity towards them in this regard, deliberately fired at least 10 times from an AK-74 at two peaceful residents. Men died from gunshot wounds. 26 March 2024, the Supreme 'Court' of the 'DPR' found Vladislav Sigis guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a strict regime colony.
