Case Description

In April 2022, in the occupied Mariupol, Russian military personnel took Ukrainian servicemen prisoner. Subsequently, they were accused of murdering two people on the grounds of hatred and enmity towards a social group, as well as using prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict. According to the Russian investigation, from February 25 to March 17, 2022, at the orders of Nikolai Kuzmenko and other commanders, Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers shelled the residential area of the village of Lebedinskoye in the DNR using a howitzer and a field gun. As a result of at least 200 shots with fragmentation-high-explosive shells, four residential buildings were damaged, and their owners suffered damage totaling more than 2.3 million rubles. December 20, 2023, the Supreme Court of the DNR found the defendants guilty and sentenced Nikolai Kuzmenko and Bogdan Pechko to 25 years in a strict regime colony. Yaroslav Bezmenov was sentenced to 23 years in prison. The other defendants in the case - Maksim Dubrov, Vladislav Sygyys, Anatoly Mogilny, Nikolai Svyatoi, Vadim Logosha, and Aleksey Kachuevsky - were sentenced to 24 years in a strict regime colony." There is no information about appealing the verdict.
