Case Description
Servicemen of the National Guard of Ukraine unit were taken prisoner or detained after the start of the special military operation on 24 February 2024. Olga Zharkova was captured in March 2022 while leaving a military garrison in Mariupol, Arthur Gretzky - on the territory of the Azovstal plant in April 2022, Alexei Smykov - leaving the combat zone after receiving multiple wounds. Not far from the territories where hostilities were taking place, participants of the nationalist unit Alexander Merochenets and Nikita Timonin, as well as Alexander Ishenko, who joined it soon after the start of the SVO, were also caught in 2022. Alexandra Irkha was detained at his home in Mariupol by the People's Militia of the DNR in April 2022 because Irkha served in a tank unit of the terrorist 'Azov' from 2015 to 2020. Former members of the unit were also Alexander Mukhin, Anatoly Grytsyk and Yaroslav Zhdamorov, Oleg Mizhgorodsky, Oleg Tyshchuk and Artem Grebeshkov, who left it in the period from 2018 to 2021. Natalia Golffiner, who worked as the head of the food warehouse of the banned "Azov", was on sick leave in February 2022 and refused to go to work, and in April she allegedly voluntarily turned to the DNR police, who detained her. According to the security forces, the detained cooks Irina Mogitic, Elena Avramova, Vladislava Mayboroda, and Marina Tekin signed confessions under various circumstances. Four more defendants — cook Nina Bondarenko, Alena Bondarchuk, Lilia Rudenko and Lilia Pavrianidis — were detained on March 17, 2022. According to the investigation, on that day, the head of the food service of the banned "Azov, Tatyana Timosheva, ordered the women cooks to leave all documents and items linking them to military service and leave Mariupol. They were taken to the city center in an armored "Kozak" vehicle, from there they walked to Yalta to the house of one of the "Azov" cooks, Lilia Rudenko. When the women came out to the Melekino checkpoint on the outskirts of Mariupol, they were detained by military personnel from the DNR and Chechnya. Criminal cases were initiated against fifteen men and nine women for the violent seizure of power in the DNR and participation in a terrorist organization. David Kasatkin and Dmitry Labinsky were handed over to Ukrainian authorities in exchange for Russian prisoners, and charges were brought against them in absentia. July 31, 2024, it became known that Alexander Ishenko died in the pre-trial detention center No. 1 in Rostov-on-Don. According to the forensic medical examination, Ishenko's death occurred as a result of shock, rib fractures, and blunt chest trauma that arose from contact with a blunt object. The autopsy was carried out already in Ukraine, according to the documents - probably when the relatives were given the body of the killed man. On September 13, 2024, as a result of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, Elena Avramova, Nina Bondarenko, Alyona Bondarchuk, Natalya Golfiner, Vladislava Mayboroda, Irina Mogitic, Lilia Pavrianidis, Lilia Rudenko, and Marina Tekin were released. On March 26, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced David Kasatkin, Dmitry Labinsky, and Alexey Smykov to 23 years in a strict regime colony, Oleg Tyshkulya, Alexander Mukhin, Yaroslav Zhdamarov, Alexander Merochenets, Nikita Timonin, and Arthur Gretsky to 22 years in a strict regime colony. The court sentenced Artemy Grebeshkov and Alexander Irkha to 20 years in a strict regime colony, Anatoly Grytsyk to 19 years in a strict regime, and Oleg Mizhgorodsky to 17 years. The court sentenced Oleg Zharkov to 13 years in a strict regime penal colony." "Lilia Rudenko and Natalya Golfiner were sentenced in absentia by the court to 14 years in a general regime penal colony, Alyona Bondarchuk, Lilia Pavrianidis, Elena Abramova, Irina Mogitic, Vladislava Mayboroda, Nina Bondarenko and Marina Tekin - to 13 years in a general regime penal colony in absentia. The court put the women on the international wanted list.
