Case Description
In Barnaul, Novosibirsk, Saint Petersburg, and Tver, on June 5, 2023, a criminal case was opened against Vasily Neustroev, Yan Ksenzhepolsky, Evgeny Zateev, Valentin Khoroshenin, Anna Arkhipova, Pavel Sinelnikov, and other participants of the Vesna movement. On June 6, 2023, law enforcement officers detained the defendants.
They were accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army out of political hatred as part of an organized group, of creating an extremist community and participating in it, of calls for mass riots and for activities aimed against state security. The defendants were also charged with leading and participating in the activities of a non-profit organization encroaching on the personality and rights of citizens, rehabilitation of Nazism, and discrediting the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
According to the investigation, no later than December 19, 2021, the leaders and participants of the Vesna movement created an extremist community. The prosecution claims that the defendants published a manifesto with a program that provided for hindering the activities of state bodies and causing damage to the country's defense. Law enforcement officers believe that community members called on citizens to mass riots, spread unreliable information about the army's activities, and rehabilitated Nazism through publications on social media.
On June 8, 2023, courts in Moscow remanded Neustroev, Yan, Zateev, Khoroshenin, Arkhipova, and Pavel into custody. Earlier, on May 10 and 11, 2022, some of them were banned from certain actions.
Bogdan Litvin, Gleb Kondratyev, Makar Dyakonov, and other persons were placed on the wanted list.
On April 8, 2026, the Saint Petersburg City Court found the defendants in the case guilty and sentenced Anna Arkhipova to 12 years in a penal colony, Yan Ksenzhepolsky to 11 years in a penal colony, Vasily Neustroev to 10 years in a penal colony, Pavel Sinelnikov to 7 years and 6 months in a penal colony. Evgeny Zateev and Valentin Khoroshenin were sentenced to 6 years and 2 months in a penal colony each.
On October 8, 2026, the Second Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the verdict unchanged.
