Case Description
On May 15, 2022, in the occupied part of Mariupol in the Donetsk region, 36-year-old Ukrainian citizen, serviceman of the "Azov" regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Pavlenko, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. Against him, a criminal case was initiated for participating in the activities of a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. On September 8, 2025, the Southern District Military Court found Viktor Pavlenko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
