Case Description
Valentin Vasileyko, a 26-year-old Ukrainian citizen and serviceman of the Azov Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen in the occupied part of Mariupol, Donetsk Oblast, no later than April 2022. A criminal case was opened against him for participating in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. On October 10, 2025, the Southern District Military Court found Valentin Vasileyko guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in a strict regime colony. February 3, 2026, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
