Case Description
During the fighting for Azovstal on May 16, 2022, in occupied Mariupol, 29-year-old Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman and Ukrainian citizen Mykola Pohrebniak was taken prisoner by Russian troops. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against him for "participation in a terrorist community" (the "Azov" battalion) and "receiving training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. According to the Russian investigation, Pogranyak signed a contract with the volunteer association "Azov" on August 15, 2016, after which he served until his capture on May 16, 2022. From August 15 to November 30, 2016, Pogrebnyak underwent training at a training camp in the village of Urzuf in the 'DPR'. Pogrebnyak performed duties related to repairing equipment and did not participate in combat operations. On September 11, the Southern District Military Court found Nikolai Pogrebnyak guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in a strict regime colony."
