Case Description
In the Kursk region on January 25, 2025, during combat operations, Russian military personnel took prisoner servicemen of the 25th Separate Assault Battalion of the Armed Formations of Ukraine, 29-year-old Alexander Chumak and 33-year-old Mikhail Prots. A criminal case was opened against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in grave consequences. According to the Russian investigation, on the morning of January 25, 2025, Chumak and Prots, armed with automatic weapons and hand grenades, as part of a unit in a "Kozak" armored vehicle, illegally invaded the territory of the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. They took up a combat position in a forest plantation near the village of Guevo. For several hours they blocked the settlement, hindered the evacuation of the population and intimidated local residents, openly carrying and using weapons. On the same day around noon, they were discovered by Russian servicemen and surrendered to captivity. On August 5, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Alexander Chumak to 15 years in prison, and Mikhail Prots to 16 years, both must serve the first 3 years of their sentences in prison, and the remaining part of the term - in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
