Case Description
In April 2022, a search was conducted at Mikhail Afanasyev, the editor-in-chief of the Khakassia publication "Novy Fokus. The reason for the criminal prosecution was an article about 11 riot police officers from Khakassia who refused to fight in Ukraine. According to investigators, the journalist published false information about the number of dead and wounded Rosgvardia soldiers in Ukraine. On April 15, Afanasyeva was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army using her official position. The Abakan City Court sent the journalist to a pre-trial detention center." "On September 7, 2023, the Abakan City Court found Mikhail Afanasyev guilty and sentenced him to five and a half years in a general regime penal colony. Afanasyev was also banned from posting materials on the Internet and in the media for two and a half years after his release. On December 18, 2023, the Supreme Court of Khakassia upheld the verdict.
