Case Description
On May 6, 2023, in the occupied Melitopol of the Zaporozhye region, a 61-year-old Ukrainian woman, a former journalist of the 'Telegraph' publication Irina Levchenko and her husband Alexander, were kidnapped right on the street. According to the Center for Journalistic Solidarity, the abducted individuals were held in torture-like conditions—almost without food, in a cold basement, on a cold concrete floor. Presumably, Irina and her husband were held on the territory of the former village of Veseloye in the Zaporizhzhia region. Irina was tortured with electricity. Alexander was released after 1 year and 3 months, on July 31, 2024, after signing a statement that he had no claims. On August 1, 2024, he was brought to the Melitopol Interdistrict Court, where the judge sentenced him to 25 days of arrest, then he was taken to the Akimovka temporary detention center, and after 12 days he was transferred to the village of Veseloye. A criminal case for espionage was opened against Irina. The details of the charges are unknown. Her arrest was officially formalized only on July 5, 2024.
