Case Description
In Mariupol, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, in May 2022, 24-year-old Ukrainian citizen and serviceman of the Azov Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ilya Trishchenko, was captured by Russian military forces. A criminal case was opened against him for participation in a terrorist organization and undergoing training with the intent to commit terrorist activities. The grounds for criminal prosecution were his service in the Ukrainian Armed Forces' nationalist Azov battalion, which is designated as a terrorist organization in Russia.
On February 27, 2026, the Southern District Military Court found Ilya Trishchenko guilty and sentenced him to 19 years in a maximum-security prison. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
