Case Description
In Khabarovsk, on January 4, 2025, at 5 a.m., a search was conducted at the home of a 52-year-old local resident, Elena Karanik. She was accused of confidential cooperation with a foreign state to the detriment of the Russian Federation. Details of the charges are unknown.
According to the woman herself, the grounds for criminal prosecution were her correspondence on Telegram with an alleged representative of the 'Freedom of Russia Legion,' who had reached out to her. The actual reason for her detention, however, was her anti-war stance and negative attitude toward the current authorities.
On January 6, 2025, the court placed Karanik in custody at the request of the investigation.
In April 2025, the charges against the Khabarovsk resident were escalated — an additional charge was added for participation in the activities of a terrorist organization.
In October 2025, the charge of confidential cooperation was reclassified as high treason.
On February 19, 2026, the 1st Eastern District Military Court found Elena Karanik guilty and sentenced her to 17 years in a general-regime penal colony and a fine of 200,000 rubles.
On September 28, 2026, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict without changes.
