Case Description

In the Kursk region, during combat operations, Ukrainian citizens, servicemen of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 41-year-old junior sergeant Oleksandr Dzyoma and 48-year-old soldier Denys Popov, were taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. The date of their detention is unknown. A criminal case was opened against Ukrainians for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on August 12, 2024, Dzoma and Popov, as part of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, illegally invaded the territory of the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. Being in the villages of Nikolayevo-Daryino and Plyekhovo, they, threatening with weapons, intimidated the local population, illegally occupied private houses, hindered the evacuation of citizens and repeatedly opened fire on Russian servicemen and civilians. It is also claimed that Dzhem and Popov's illegal actions resulted in "a significant violation of the conditions for the operation of credit institutions within the banking system of the Russian Federation, the conduct of educational activities, and the provision of qualified medical and social assistance." "On March 19, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Alexander Dzem and Denis Popov guilty and sentenced each of them to 15 years of imprisonment, the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
