- Former journalist and author of Krym.Realii. In 2021, he joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in the 501st separate marine battalion of the 36th brigade of the Naval Forces. Publicist, political scientist, one of those who helped internally displaced persons, organized events, was a participant in the "Direct Action" trade union. Before the full-scale invasion, he fought against the Russian annexation of the peninsula and participated in human rights activities. In the spring of 2022, he found himself surrounded in Mariupol as part of the 501st Separate Marine Corps Battalion and was taken prisoner. Since April 2023, Denis has been held in the SIZO No. 2 of the city of Kineshma, Ivanovo Region, Russia, almost two years - in a solitary cell. According to released prisoners, in 2024 he was deliberately starved.

A Ukrainian citizen, anti-fascist, sailor of the 501st separate motorized rifle battalion of the 36th separate motorized rifle brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Denis Matsola has been in Russian captivity since 2022.
