Case Description
32-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Artem Chesnokov was taken prisoner by Russian soldiers in May 2022 at the exit from Azovstal in Mariupol, occupied Donetsk region. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against him for participation in the activities of a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the Azov regiment, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. On June 17, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Artem Chesnokov guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in a strict regime colony. November 19, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
