Case Description
During the fighting at the Azovstal plant on May 17, 2022, in occupied Mariupol, 43-year-old serviceman of the Azov battalion, Ukrainian citizen Oleksiy Musafirov, was taken prisoner by Russian troops. Subsequently, the Ukrainian was accused of "participating in a terrorist community" and "undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities." According to the Russian investigation, Musafirov signed a contract with the volunteer association 'Azov' on December 24, 2016, after which he served until his capture on May 17, 2022. Between January 1 and March 31, 2017, Musafirov underwent training at a training camp in the village of Urzuf on the territory of the 'DNR'. On 11 September 2024, the Southern Military Court found Alexey Musafirov guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime penal colony. March 20, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the verdict unchanged.
