Case Description
In St. Petersburg in April 2022, a local resident, artist Alexandra Skochilenko, was detained. A search was conducted in her house. A criminal case was opened against her for "fakes" about the Russian army on the grounds of political hatred. According to the investigation, the artist replaced six price tags in the "Perekrestok" store with leaflets with anti-war inscriptions. They stated that Russia is sending conscripts to fight in Ukraine, that Vladimir Putin has repeatedly failed to keep his promises to the population, and that it is necessary to stop the war started by Russia. The leaflets also mentioned the shooting of the Drama Theater in Mariupol. 13 April 2022, the Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg sent Skochilenko to a pre-trial detention center. On November 16, 2023, Judge Oksana Demyasheva of the Vasileostrovsky District Court of St. Petersburg found Alexandra Skochilenko guilty and sentenced her to seven years in a general regime colony. On August 1, 2024, Aleksandr Skochilenko was released as part of a prisoner exchange between Germany and Russia. September 11, 2024, Judge Andrey Dondik of the St. Petersburg City Court upheld the verdict.
