Case Description
In January 2023, Alexandra Garmajapova, the founder of the Free Buryatia Foundation who had left the country, was charged in absentia with spreading 'fake news' about the actions of the Russian army out of political hatred. The reason for the criminal prosecution was an interview released in July 2022, in which Garmajapova told about 17 military personnel who were "locked in the commandant's office" on the territory of the so-called "LPR" after refusing to participate in the "SVO. In February, information appeared that Garmajapov had been put on the wanted list and arrested in absentia. On November 10, 2023, Judge Denis Nikonov of the Sovetsky District Court of Ulan-Ude found Alexandra Garmajapova guilty and sentenced her in absentia to seven years in prison. On February 8, 2024, the Supreme Court of Buryatia upheld the verdict.
