Case Description
On April 22, 2022, in the occupied Donetsk region, the Russian FSB reported that it "suppressed the activities of a sabotage group." 2. Five Ukrainian citizens, 34-year-old active serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Igor Gorlov, 44-year-old Andrey Golubev, 43-year-old Vladimir Zuev, 53-year-old Alexander Zhukov, and 60-year-old veteran of combat operations Yuri Petrov, were accused of an act of international terrorism and participation in a terrorist community. According to the Russian investigation, the detained individuals planned to attack a "Russian humanitarian convoy and Russian military personnel" using a car bomb. The Ukrainians themselves said that in April 2022, all five were abducted by Russian security forces. At first, they were held in Melitopol's underground prisons, where they were tortured with electricity and beaten. Igor Gorlov said that when he was threatened that his family would be tortured, he tried to commit suicide and pierced his throat with a nail. He was saved by doctors. They were then taken to the annexed Crimea, where their detention and arrest were officially formalized: the Kyiv District Court of Simferopol sent all the defendants in the case into custody. Later the men were transferred to Moscow. April 29, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced Igor Gorlov and Yuri Petrov to 14 years, Andrei Golubev and Alexander Zhukov - to 12 years, and Vladimir Zuev - to 11 years in a strict regime colony. The first 5.5 years of the sentence the convicts will have to serve in prison.
