Case Description
In the Belgorod region on August 28, 2024, 35-year-old Alexander Chebotarev, a native of Kursk, was detained. He was accused of treason, participation in the activities of a terrorist organization, illegal acquisition and storage of weapons, as well as explosives and explosive devices. According to the investigation, in February - March 2024, Chebotarev established contact with representatives of the "Freedom of Russia" legion. According to their assignment, for monetary compensation, he retrieved from a cache in the Bryansk region parts of firearms and ammunition, which he transported and hid in Novorossiysk. In April of the same year, the man came to Moscow to gather information about broadcasting organizations on Pravdy Street. Later, from May to August, he stored firearms of Ukrainian manufacture and explosives in his garage in the village of Troitskoye." Chebotarev himself claimed that he was transporting parcels on order, believing that they contained drugs, and that his trip to the capital was for tourism. For the duration of the investigation, the defendant was placed in a pre-trial detention center. On January 16, 2026, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Alexander Chebotarev guilty and sentenced him to 21 years in prison, the first 4 years he must spend in prison, and the remaining part of the term—in a strict regime correctional colony. The court also fined him 700 thousand. rubles, 1 year of restriction of freedom and ordered to confiscate the mobile device and money received for working for the Ukrainian side."
