Case Description
On December 18, 2024, a 44-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a gunner of the 61st separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Gotsulenko, was captured by the Russian military in the Kursk region during hostilities. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, causing significant damage.
According to the version of the Russian investigation, on October 29, 2024, Gotsulenko together with his fellow soldiers illegally crossed the Russian state border in Sujansky district of Kursk region. While in the settlements of Goncharovka and Cherkasskaya Konopelka, he set up firing positions in residential houses and monitored the movements of Russian troops. The investigation claims that Gotsulenko "passed information to the Ukrainian military, intimidated civilians and forbade them to evacuate".
On July 24, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Yuri Gotsulenko guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison; he will serve the first 5 years of his sentence in prison and the rest of his sentence in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and came into legal force.
