Case Description
In the Belgorod region in February 2024, during an attempt to cross the state border with Ukraine, 36-year-old Yuriy Boyko, a resident of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, was detained. A criminal case was opened against him for attempted state treason and participation in the activities of a terrorist organization. According to the investigation, in January 2024, Boyko allegedly made contact with a representative of the Ukrainian security service and reported his intention to participate in hostilities against the Russian Federation. After that, Boyko sent a completed questionnaire, a photo of his passport, and a video recording of his oath of allegiance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine using a messenger. Following the instructions of the SBU representative, in February 2024, the man left on a regular bus to the Belgorod region, intending to cross the state border to switch to the side of the enemy. The court placed the defendant in a pre-trial detention center. On August 22, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Yuri Boyko guilty and sentenced him to 17 years in prison, 3 of which he must serve in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime colony.
