Case Description
On April 12, 2022, in the occupied Mariupol, Russian military captured 20-year-old serviceman, sniper of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yan Khudoba. Subsequently, a criminal case was opened against him for cruel treatment of the civilian population and the use of prohibited methods in an armed conflict, as well as murder motivated by political and ideological hatred and enmity. According to the Russian investigation, on March 18, 2022, Khudoba, being near a kindergarten in Mariupol, shot a retreating unarmed volunteer in the back with a sniper rifle, who was not a participant in the armed conflict. After the shot, the killer approached the wounded man and, realizing that he was still alive, fired another shot at him. A peaceful resident died on the spot from gunshot wounds. No later than May 31, 2023 (the exact date is unknown), the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Yan Khudoba guilty and sentenced him to 23 years in a strict regime colony. October 18, 2023, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction reduced the sentence to 22 years. September 13, 2024, Yana Khudobu was released as a result of a prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
