Case Description
On November 20, 2019, in Lyubertsy, Moscow region, a criminal case was opened against journalists of the publication "Rosstrezhdava" Yan Katelevsky and Alexander Dorogov. They were accused of extortion for the purpose of obtaining property on a particularly large scale and insulting an official. Katelevsky was also charged under the article on damaging property out of hooligan motives.
According to the investigation, Dorogov and Katelevsky through their acquaintance Dmitry Filimonov extorted 1.5 million rubles from the traffic police inspector Gorokhov for stopping the publication of compromising video materials. Also, during one of the shootings, the bloggers publicly insulted the inspector. In addition, the investigation believes that Katelevsky damaged his car during a conflict with the driver, and Dorogov in another episode extorted 100 thousand rubles from the director of the store "Tarelochka", threatening to distribute videos of violations. Another episode of Dorogov's charges relates to a conflict in the office of PromMash Test, where, according to the investigation, he used a gas canister against an employee of the company.
On July 29, 2020, the journalists were detained. On July 30, the Lyuberetsky District Court of Moscow Region placed the defendants in custody.
On November 17, 2023, the Lyuberetsky City Court of the Moscow region found the defendants in the case guilty and sentenced Yan Katelevsky to 9.5 years and Alexander Dorogov to 10.5 years in a strict regime colony. The court sentenced the third defendant in the case, Dmitry Filimonov, to a seven-year suspended sentence with a probation period of four years.
On June 11, 2024, the Moscow Regional Court left the verdict unchanged.
On January 15, 2026, the Kovrov City Court of Vladimir Region granted the motion of Katelevsky's defense to change the type of correctional facility to a settlement colony.
