Case Description
In early June 2023, in the Belgorod region, 36-year-old Vyacheslav Kuznetsov, a resident of the city of Menzelinsk, Republic of Tatarstan, was detained. According to law enforcement officials, Kuznetsov attempted to cross the border on foot in the Belgorod region on May 10 and June 5, 2023, and fight on the side of Ukraine. The FSB claims that the man sent his questionnaire to the "Freedom of Russia" legion. Kuznetsova was accused of attempted state treason and participation in a terrorist organization. The court sent him to a pre-trial detention center. On April 8, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Military Court found Vyacheslav Kuznetsov guilty and sentenced him to nine years in prison. Kuznetsov must serve three years in prison, and the remaining six years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
