Case Description
In 2024, during hostilities in the Kursk region, Ukrainian citizens, servicemen of the 61st Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - 49-year-old shooter Vyacheslav Gevko and 45-year-old gunner-operator Vladislav Shevel - were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Criminal charges were brought against them for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on the night of December 24, 2024, Gevko and Shevel, along with other military personnel, armed with AK-74 assault rifles with ammunition and F-1 hand grenades, illegally crossed the border of the Russian Federation in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region. After that, they moved towards the village of Cherkasskaya Konopelka, where they held observation and fire positions, observed Russian military personnel and intimidated civilians by using weapons. On July 29, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Vyacheslav Gevko and Vladislav Shevely guilty. Gevko was sentenced to 16 years, and Shevely - to 15 years in prison. For the first 3 years, each of them must serve in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence - in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
