Case Description
On May 13, 2025, in the Kursk region during combat operations, a 44-year-old Ukrainian citizen, Vladimir Yareschenko, a shooter from the 425th Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, early in the morning of May 9, 2025, Yareschenko, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle with ammunition and two hand grenades, together with other military personnel on a quad bike (according to another source — on an armored personnel carrier) illegally crossed the state border of Russia and invaded the Kursk region. He proceeded towards the village of Novy Put in Glushkovsky District to block and hold it. Yareschenko "held an observation and fire position, opposed Russian forces, intimidated the civilian population, and participated in the disorganization of the activities of the authorities. October 7, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Vladimir Yareschenko guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison, with the first 4 years to be served in prison and the remaining part in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
