Case Description
On October 18, 2024, in the Kursk region, during combat operations, a 36-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a soldier of the 17th separate tank brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a shooter-medic Vladimir Nikolenko, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on the morning of September 28, 2024, Nikolenko, as part of a unit, illegally invaded the territory of the Kursk region. On the same day, he arrived in the settlement of Olgovka in the Korenevsky district, where he stayed in a house abandoned by civilians that had been equipped as a combat position. During the next three weeks, he "blocked the specified settlement, prevented the evacuation of civilians, and intimidated local residents. On June 2, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Volodymyr Nikolayenko guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. During the first three years, he must serve in prison, and the remaining part in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
