Case Description
A criminal case was opened against Ukrainian citizen and Ukrainian Armed Forces serviceman Vitaly Smaly for "participation in a terrorist community" and "training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the "Azov" regiment. The date of the Ukrainian's capture is unknown. On November 27, 2024, the Southern District Military Court found Vitaly Smaly guilty, the size of the punishment is unknown. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. On July 4, 2025, Vitaly Smaly was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
