Case Description
In the early October 2024, during hostilities in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, 30-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the 17th separate tank brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, grenade launcher assistant Vitaly Masegora, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation's version, on the evening of September 25, 2024, Masegora, being a serviceman of a Ukrainian tank brigade, crossed the Russian state border as part of a unit in a civilian vehicle and invaded the Sudzhansky district. Together with his comrades, he "participated in blocking the city of Sudzh, held firing positions in forest plantations, intimidated peaceful residents and prevented their evacuation." On April 11, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Vitaly Masegora guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison, the first 3 years he must spend in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence - in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
