Case Description
Russian security forces abducted a 49-year-old local resident, Ukrainian citizen with forced Russian citizenship Vitaliy Kozachenko, in the Zaporizhzhia region on August 27, 2023. He was accused of high treason, participation in a terrorist community, and planning a terrorist attack. According to the Russian investigation, Kozachenko, together with certain accomplices, 'planned to carry out an explosion of homemade explosives, expecting that due to this a police officer would die.' Such an instruction was given to him by a 'curator' from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. In addition, Kozachenko collected and passed information about the deployment locations of personnel and equipment of the Russian Ministry of Defense units in the Zaporizhzhia region to the enemy's special services. The court placed the defendant in a pre-trial detention center. On September 17, 2025, the Southern District Military Court found Vitaliy Kozachenko guilty and sentenced him to 17 years of imprisonment, the first 4 of which he will spend in prison, and the remaining in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
