Case Description
In Mariupol, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than the end of May 2022, a 28-year-old citizen of Ukraine, a serviceman of the Azov regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Vitaly Kostyuchenko, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. Against him, a criminal case was initiated for participating in the activities of a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. On October 2, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Vitaly Kostyuchenko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime colony.
