Case Description
On May 2, 2018, in the Donetsk region, Vitaliy Chmil, a citizen of Ukraine and a soldier of the 36th Marine Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was captured by the separatists of the DNR. For several months he was listed as missing. Later, Vitaly appeared in several pro-Russian propaganda videos. He was able to contact his mother and told her that he was kept in a basement with rats and tortured. Charges were brought against Chmily under the DNR code for undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities and forcibly seizing power. The details of the charges are unknown. No later than autumn 2018 (the exact date is unknown), the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Vitaly Chmila guilty and sentenced him to 17 years of imprisonment in a strict regime colony. There is also no information about appealing the verdict.
