Case Description
7 January 2025, in the Kursk region, during combat operations, a 35-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a shooter from the 21st Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Viktor Zelenko, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on the night of November 27, 2024, Zelenyko, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle, ammunition for it, and four hand grenades (two each of F-1 and RGD-5), together with other servicemen of his unit on a BMP, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, after which he proceeded deep into its territory "in order to block and hold the village of Nikolayevo-Darino under armed control. At observation and fire positions equipped in residential buildings, Zelenyko acted as an observer of the actions of Russian servicemen, as well as 'intimidated the civilian population by using weapons and prohibited evacuation'. July 16, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Viktor Zelenyenko guilty and sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, with the first 5 years to be served in prison, and the remaining part in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
