Case Description
On May 14, 2025, in the Kursk region, a 36-year-old citizen of Ukraine, serviceman of the 425th Separate Assault Regiment "Skala" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Viktor Yarostyuk, fell into captivity to Russian servicemen. He was accused of committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in grave consequences. According to the Russian investigation, on May 13, 2025, Yarostyuk, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle and grenades, as part of a combat unit, illegally crossed the state border of Russia in the Glukhovsky district of the Kursk region. Arriving at firing positions near the village of Novy Put, he, together with his comrades, began blocking the settlement, intimidating the population, disrupting the activities of government bodies, as well as conducting reconnaissance and repelling attempts by Russian servicemen to advance. The next day he surrendered to captivity. On October 15, 2025, the 2nd Western District Military Court found Viktor Yarostyuk guilty and sentenced him to 14 years of imprisonment, the first 4 years he must serve in prison, and the remaining part of the sentence - in a correctional colony of strict regime. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
