On December 28, 2024, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, 45-year-old Ukrainian citizen Viktor Sokolovsky, a shooter from the 61st Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on August 31, 2024, Sokolsky, as part of a unit in a truck, illegally invaded the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region and proceeded to the city of Sudzha, where he received a Czech-made assault rifle and ammunition. The next day he took up a firing position in a forest area near the village of Makhnovka. For four months, Sokolsky "blocked the settlement, prevented the evacuation of civilians, and intimidated local residents by demonstrating and using weapons." "August 8, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Viktor Sokolovsky guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in prison, with the first 5 years to be served in a prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony.
