Case Description
In Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than the end of March 2022, a 36-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a soldier of the "Azov" regiment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Viktor Karas, was taken prisoner by Russian soldiers. A criminal case was opened against him for participating in a terrorist community and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the nationalist "Azov" battalion, recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. 25 October 2024, the Southern Military Court found Viktor Karas guilty, and sentenced him to 18 years of imprisonment in a strict regime colony. March 3, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
