Case Description

Near the village of Rubezhnoye in the Luhansk region during a battle on April 7, 2022, Ukrainian military personnel, 56-year-old Viktor Didyk and his 31-year-old son Roman Didyk, were taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. Subsequently, Russian investigators initiated a criminal case against Viktor and Roman for "participation in a terrorist community" and "illegal storage, transportation, and carrying of firearms and ammunition for them." "According to the version of Russian law enforcement, in 2015, the father and son, being in Dnipropetrovsk, voluntarily joined the ranks of the 'terrorist community "Dnipro-1. '", 5. The aforementioned formation took an active part in hostilities aimed at 'forcing the residents of Donbas to abandon the decision on self-determination that was made.' "In the spring of 2022, being mobilized on the territory of Ukraine, Ukrainians participated in hostilities in the village of Rubezhnoye, Lugansk People's Republic. At the same time, they had firearms and ammunition for them, which they used during combat duty. On December 14, 2023, the Southern Military Court found Viktor and Roman Didykov guilty and sentenced both to 8 years in a general regime penal colony. In court, Viktor Didyk recounted that he agreed to sign all interrogation protocols because the investigator promised that in such a case, he and his son would be exchanged for Russian prisoners of war, allowing the father and son to return home. However, the exchange did not take place." June 25, 2025, the Appellate Military Court changed the verdict, details are unknown.
