Case Description
In Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than July 10, 2023, Vasily Tkachuk, commander of a platoon of the 56th separate mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, was taken prisoner. He was accused of murder and attempted murder of two or more persons committed by an organized group on grounds of political and ideological hatred, as well as using prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict. According to the Russian investigation, from February 24 to April 12, 2022, Tkachuk and his subordinates were stationed at combat positions in residential buildings in Mariupol. Following his orders, military personnel opened fire on civilians to prevent their exit from the city. As a result of the actions of his subordinates, eight civilians died, and two others managed to survive. On January 30, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Vasily Tkachuk guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment to be served in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. 5 February 2026, Vasily Tkachuk was released during the next exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine.
