Case Description
In Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, 29-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the 'Azov' regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Yeremeyev, was taken prisoner by Russian military. He was accused of killing two people on the grounds of political and ideological hatred, as well as cruel treatment of the civilian population and the use of prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict. According to the Russian investigation, on March 26, 2022, Yeremeyev was on an observation post on the territory of School No. 1 in Mariupol. Seeing a passenger car with identification marks in the form of white ribbons, in which a peaceful resident was located, Yeryomayev, believing that the man held pro-Russian views, fired at least ten aimed shots from an AK-47 assault rifle. The man died at the scene from his wounds. On 9 December 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Valeriy Yeremeyev guilty and sentenced him to 22 years in prison with serving the sentence in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
