Case Description
In Makhachkala in April 2022, security forces conducted a search at the home of 93-year-old Svetlana Anokhina, the mother of the founder of the human rights group "Marem" and a journalist. A criminal case was opened against her for "fakes" about the Russian army. The alleged reason for the criminal prosecution was posts on Instagram published in April 2023. The human rights activist herself left Russia in 2021. Early in September 2024, security forces came to the home of Anokhina's 95-year-old mother to take a saliva sample for DNA testing. Since "Anokhina herself was not present; a saliva sample was taken from her mother." Similar practices are extended to relatives of militants and terrorists, who are usually identified through DNA testing of relatives.
