Case Description
On 23 November 2024, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, 34-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the 129th separate brigade of the territorial defence of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Shapoval, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, in November 2024 Shapoval, armed with an AK-74 assault rifle as part of Ukrainian Armed Forces units, illegally invaded the territory of the Russian Federation. Being in the Sudzhansky district of the Kursk region, he "intimidated local residents, prevented their evacuation, repeatedly opened fire on Russian servicemen and civilians, and also participated in the illegal armed blockade of the village of Pleshovo." 16 May 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Sergey Shapoval guilty and sentenced him to 16 years imprisonment, with the first 3 years to be served in prison, and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
