Case Description
On September 24, 2023, in Melitopol, occupied Zaporizhzhia region, 45-year-old local resident, Ukrainian citizen Sergey Popov, was detained. He was accused of espionage. According to the Russian investigation, in May 2023 Popov collected data on the deployment of military equipment and personnel of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. He transmitted the specified information via an internet messenger to an employee of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. For the duration of the investigation, the Ukrainian was placed in a pre-trial detention center. On October 11, 2024, the Zaporizhzhia Oblast Court found Sergey Popov guilty and sentenced him to 12 years in prison to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. There is no information about appealing the verdict.
