Case Description
On October 14, 2024, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, 46-year-old Ukrainian citizen, soldier of the 47th separate mechanized brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, shooter Sergey Palaida, was taken prisoner by Russian military personnel. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on the evening of October 13, 2024, Palaida, as part of a group of three people, illegally invaded the territory of the Kursk region. In the forest belt near the village of Novy Put in the Glushkovsky district, he equipped a combat position. With the aim of disrupting the activities of government bodies, Palaida "blocked the settlement, hindered the evacuation of civilians, intimidated local residents with weapons, and fired at Russian servicemen." 27 May 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Sergey Palaida guilty and sentenced him to 15 years imprisonment, with the first 3 years to be served in prison and the remainder in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
