Case Description
In Korolev, Moscow Oblast, in early July 2019, 78-year-old scientist Sergey Shcherbakov, a specialist at the Roscosmos TsNIIMash Institute, was detained. He was accused of high treason.
According to the investigation, Shcherbakov, who held the position of senior research fellow at the Center for Heat Exchange and Aerogas Dynamics, was involved in transmitting classified data to the Belgian von Kármán Institute for Fluid Dynamics. This occurred under the international scientific cooperation program FP7-SPACE, approved by the Russian government. Sergey Shcherbakov specialized in asteroid and space debris protection, participating in projects jointly with European and American colleagues. Details of the charges were not disclosed due to the classified nature of the case materials.
On July 4, 2019, the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow imposed house arrest as a pre-trial measure.
On April 15, 2022, the Moscow Oblast Court found Sergey Andreyevich Shcherbakov guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in prison, suspended. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
