Case Description
In Mariupol, in the occupied part of the Donetsk region, no later than April 2022, 32-year-old Ukrainian citizen and serviceman of the Azov Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Medvedev, was captured by Russian forces. A criminal case was opened against him for participation in a terrorist organization and undergoing training aimed at carrying out terrorist activities. The grounds for prosecution were his service in the Ukrainian Armed Forces' nationalist Azov battalion, which is designated as terrorist in Russia.
In April 2026, the Southern District Military Court found Serhiy Medvedev guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a maximum-security prison colony.
