Case Description
In Moscow in February 2025, a criminal case was opened against former HSE professor and political scientist Sergey Medvedev. He was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army motivated by political and ideological hatred and repeated "discrediting" of the Russian army. According to the investigation, in 2022, the journalist, living abroad, published false information about the actions of Russian military personnel. The details of the charges are unknown. Earlier, in November 2023 and January 2024, Medvedev was brought to administrative responsibility under the article on 'discrediting' the Russian army due to posts on Facebook. In February 2025, the court issued an in absentia arrest warrant for the case's defendant. Since 2022, the political scientist has been on the list of "foreign agents." On September 29, 2025, the Tverskoy District Court of Moscow found Sergey Medvedev guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 10 years in a general regime colony. The defendant was also prohibited from administering websites and channels on the internet for 5 years.
