Case Description
In the occupied part of Mariupol in the Donetsk region, no later than May 2024, a 33-year-old Ukrainian citizen, a shooter and paramedic of the Aidar regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Sergey Dzyuba, fell into the hands of Russian soldiers. A criminal case was opened against him for participating in the activities of a terrorist organization and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. The reason for the criminal prosecution was his service in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the nationalist Aidar battalion, which is recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia. According to the Russian investigation, in May 2024, Dzyuba voluntarily joined the ranks of the paramilitary formation of the 24th Separate Assault Battalion "Aydar" of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After receiving military training at training bases located in the city of Druzhkovka, Kramatorsk district, in the position of a rifleman-sanitarian, he "took part in hostilities against the peaceful population of the DNR and military personnel of the Russian Federation. On September 10, 2025, the Southern Military District Court found Sergey Dzyuba guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in prison, with the first 3 years to be served in prison, the rest in a strict regime correctional colony.
