Case Description
In Mariupol, the occupied part of the Donetsk region, in April 2022, a 24-year-old sniper of the Ukrainian nationalist Azov battalion, Artem Moroz, was captured by Russian soldiers. He was accused of murdering two people committed by an organized group on the grounds of political and ideological hatred, as well as of cruel treatment of the civilian population. According to the Russian investigation, on April 3, 2022, Dumchik was at a combat position near the Machine Builders Square in Mariupol. Following the commander's order, he fired an automatic weapon at a car carrying three unarmed men. They managed to leave the car and take cover. On November 9, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Sergey Dumchik guilty and sentenced him to 20 years in a strict regime penal colony. Information about an appeal against the verdict is not available.
