Case Description
On February 15, 2025, in the village of Dachnoye, near Kurakhovo, in the Kursk region, during hostilities, a Ukrainian citizen, a soldier of the 225th Separate Assault Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, soldier Sergey Chumarnoy, was taken prisoner by Russian servicemen. A criminal case was opened against him for committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in significant damage. According to the Russian investigation, on November 19, 2024, Chumarnoy, as part of a combat unit in a BTR, illegally crossed the state border of the Russian Federation. Later that day, after the drone attack on the vehicle, the wounded Chumarnoy left the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region and returned to Ukraine. In January 2025, he was seconded to one of the units in the area of the village of Dachnoye in the Donetsk People's Republic. On October 15, 2025, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Sergey Chumarniy guilty and sentenced him to 15 years of imprisonment, with the first 4 years to be served in prison and the remaining part in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
